Profile
Hello! I’m Emily (she/her), a freelance academic editor. I run Framing Devices, a home for my work as a developmental and stylistic editor for academic authors working in the humanities. I’ve worked with authors in art history, communication studies, cultural studies, history, history of science and technology, film studies, media studies, and visual culture, among other disciplines.
My services: I offer developmental and stylistic editing for academic authors as well as 1:1 project support and coaching.
I work on a wide range of academic manuscripts and materials, including:
- articles, book chapters, book manuscripts, and book proposals.
My approach: A developmental editor helps “develop” your ideas rather than critique them. I work with authors to strengthen their manuscripts-in-progress by assessing the current state of the project, providing tangible suggestions for improvement, and proposing a realistic, achievable plan for revision. I can help you clarify the big picture of your project and offer concrete strategies to strengthen your argument and make your intellectual contributions crystal clear. While I enjoy working with authors at every career stage and at every point in the writing process, I particularly enjoy supporting early career authors working on dissertation-to-book revision processes.
About me: I began my editing career after completing a PhD in Art History at the University of Toronto in 2020. As I navigated the process of publishing my own scholarship, I found myself wishing that more support was available to academic writers. I pursued formal training in developmental editing with Laura Portwood-Stacer of Manuscript Works. I’ve continued my professional development through membership in editorial associations, regular workshops and training, and networking with other editors.
