Profile
Looking for a math, science, or economics textbook editor, or a thesis, dissertation, or journal article specialist? As a math PhD with a strong literary and communications background, I specialize in copy editing high school, college, and university textbooks as well as academic journals, theses, and dissertations. My subject foci are math, science, and finance and economics, but I am also experienced in and comfortable with arts, humanities, and social sciences content. Trained at Cambridge University Press, I have worked with a broad range of clients, including McGraw-Hill Education, Nelson Education, Pearson Education Canada, the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training, and academic clients on a private basis. I have 30+ years’ experience of all types of editing, and clients have particularly valued my clarity, insight, and ability to help resolve complex issues – as well as my friendly, congenial style. CV and references available on request, or check out my website, thefreelancemind.net, or my LinkedIn presence:
“Not only was Tom very thorough with a text densely populated with all kinds of mistakes, but he clearly has a deep understanding of the content. In fact, many of his editorial suggestions regard aspects of the maths of the kind that only good referees usually identify.” — Oxford Language Editing
“…superb. The best I’ve ever had on my six books. He treated the copy-editing as a collaborative process, had excellent suggestions, and made no final substantive changes without consulting me.” — Prof. David Mermin, author of Why Quark Rhymes with Pork
“I want to thank you for doing a great job, you have been fantastic to work with. Even though your comments have helped me improve my writing, I’m not sure I’ll be able to go back to working without an editor after this” — Ben MacAdam, PhD candidate in computational category theory
