Access to some Editors Canada web resources remains offline
Editors Canada’s free member access to the Canadian Press, the Chicago Manual of Style and Oxford resources remains offline.
Our website’s EZProxy connection to these resources unexpectedly went offline in March. As you may recall, our website developer and the national office were aware this might happen when the new website launched in January; however, the EZProxy connection was working properly when the site launched and continued to do so for several weeks.
Our website developer enlisted the help of the teams at our previous website host, as well as our new web host, to find the problem. They believe they have now identified that the issue is our new web host’s security measures. To protect its servers, the web host typically does not allow developers to install new programs. This includes EZProxy, despite the fact this service is used by libraries all over the world to safely deliver e-resources to its users.
Our website developer has escalated the request with our web host, but has not been successful convincing them to allow EZProxy to be installed. In the meantime, the national office has asked our developer to look into other solutions, including potentially moving the entire website to a new web host
The national office will provide an update as soon as our web developer provides more information. The staff is following up daily to keep our developer focused on getting EZProxy working again as quickly as possible.
We know this has been very frustrating for Editors Canada members and student affiliates who were used to using the free resources we offered through EZProxy every day. We apologize sincerely.
In compensation for the EZProxy downtime, and as a token of our gratitude for your patience, the national executive council has approved offering each member and student affiliate a free webinar recording. The national office is working with our Findjoo member portal and e-commerce provider on the logistics of this offer. Details about how to claim a free webinar recording will come from the national office the week of May 6.
Thank you for your continued patience!
