1. MEMBER SERVICES: Home and auto insurance policies for members not renewed
Back in the July e-news update we sent notice that Economical Insurance (formerly Waterloo Insurance) decided to stop offering home and auto insurance to EAC members. Economical informed the national office that members who had already signed up would still be insured for the remainder of their terms, but the plans would not be renewed once the terms were up.
We were stunned to hear from one member whose policy was cancelled by Economical without notice. The national office contacted Economical immediately and was assured that EAC member policy holders whose policies had been cancelled would be contacted directly.
EAC works to offer excellent member benefits and services and we rely on our partners to operate responsibly. The national office is currently working with brokers to source new providers for discounted home and auto insurance. Although the office has not found an adequate offering for EAC members as a whole, members are invited to contact Affinity Insurance directly to discuss individual home and auto insurance options.

2. HIRE AN EDITOR: Thanks for your participation
For three weeks in October we piloted a social media campaign to promote hiring an editor. Over the course of the campaign, we ran ads geared toward hiring managers in the finance and IT sectors and encouraged editors to take part in daily #hireaneditor discussions. We learned a lot about the editors in our network.
- We work on projects as varied as crossword puzzles, federal government communications and speeches, and in industries as diverse as science, sports and international relations.
- We are former lawyers, teachers, writers and reporters who found a niche in the magic that happens behind the scenes.
- We are constantly learning to improve our skills and we are indebted to the mentors who helped us to find our true calling.
- We understand the challenges in creating the best communication possible. We strive to ensure that our clients and employers look great.
Thanks to all who took part in the daily discussions and pushed the #hireaneditor message forward. It was a treat to watch the clout (and Klout scores) of our active participants climb.
The supporting ad campaign directed at hiring managers will continue. In the meantime, you can do your part to raise the profile of the editing profession. Keep spreading the word about the importance of hiring editors. We encourage you to make the #hireaneditor hashtag your own. In the coming weeks we’ll have a report for EAC members on the outcomes of this campaign. We’ll be back in 2014 with #hireaneditor 2.0.

4. GOVERNING EAC: Changes for discussion
Since fall 2012, EAC’s governance task force has been reviewing the association’s bylaws and policies for compliance with new federal legislation. The result: some changes are required.
Members will be asked to formally approve a new bylaw and associated policies at the 2014 AGM. The task force has prepared a draft of the new bylaw, together with a backgrounder and FAQ document providing further information. Documents are available for download from the EAC website. All EAC members are encouraged to review the documents now. Comments and questions are welcome and can be sent to governance@editors.ca.
5. THE EDITORS’ WEEKLY: Managing editor position available
Do you love blogs and all things blogging? Do you have project management and assignment editing experience? If so, The Editors’ Weekly needs you! EAC’s highly successful blog is in need of a new managing editor to coordinate weekly blog updates and assign articles as needed. This is an excellent opportunity to work on a well-respected, high-profile EAC product. You will build management and online publishing experience, and liaise with talented writers, all while adding impressive credentials to your resumé! If you’re interested in this position, please contact marketing and public relations committee chair Tina Dealwis.
6. TOM FAIRLEY AWARD: Submit your nomination for the 30th anniversary award
It’s our time to shine!
Editing might be an invisible art, but that doesn’t mean great editors should hide in the shadows. Help us shine a spotlight on editing excellence by submitting a nomination for the 30th annual Tom Fairley Award!
The recipient of the 30th annual Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence will receive a $2,000 cash prize and will be recognized at EAC’s 2014 conference banquet in Toronto on June 7. What’s more, finalists will receive a cash prize of $500 each, because being shortlisted for the Tom Fairley Award is also recognition of outstanding editorial performance.
The deadline for your letter of nomination is Friday, January 10. Supporting material must be received by Friday, January 24.
Please spread this message far and wide. Nominees don’t have to be members of EAC and self-nominations are encouraged.

Editors know that the fine art of editing extends beyond books and print media. While EAC’s Tom Fairley Award has been awarded to many outstanding book editors since it was created in 1983, we encourage nominations for a variety of written projects. Whether it’s a magazine, corporate or government report, software documentation or a book, we want to hear about it. When it comes to editing, the variety of material is limitless!
7. BRITISH COLUMBIA: EAC-BC connects with authors at Word Vancouver
On Sunday, September 29, the British Columbia branch (EAC-BC) participated in Word Vancouver, the signature event of The Vancouver Book and Magazine Fair Society. On behalf of EAC-BC, Shelagh Jamieson gave a presentation on Finding, Hiring, and Working with a Freelance Editor, to explain the benefits of working with an editor and to help writers through the process. The audience of about 25 was quite receptive, with many follow-up questions and requests for business cards. Janet Love Morrison was on hand to assist with the Q&A after presenting an earlier talk, Get Published. Susan Safyan also spoke about Editing: Both Sides of the Fence, and several EAC-BC members helped staff the EAC booth. The event was well-attended despite afternoon rain, which brought the festivities indoors. Word Vancouver describes itself as “A Free Festival of Reading & Writing” and features exhibits, performances, readings, workshops and more. The five-day event is held in Vancouver’s historic Library Square in the heart of downtown.
8. HAMILTON–HALTON: Upcoming events
Hamilton–Halton Twig (HH) November Meeting: A Professional Meet-up that offers HH members and the members of the local Canadian Authors Association and Professional Writers Association of Canada an opportunity to network, explore collaborations and socialize, on Thursday, November 14, at the Mulberry Street Coffee House in downtown Hamilton, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The next Hamilton–Halton Twig Koffee Klatch is Wednesday, December 4, at 12 p.m. at India Village Restaurant, 370 Wilson St. E. in Ancaster (905 304-1213). Everyone is welcome to join the group for coffee or lunch and conversation.

Ottawa writer and editor Marion Soublière, author of Getting Work with the Federal Government: A guide to figuring out the procurement puzzle (iUniverse, 2010), will explain how to get onto federal government supplier lists, and how to search out upcoming contracts. The federal government changed the rules recently to make bidding on contracts easier for small businesses. Marion, an experienced editor who works mainly on government contracts, will explain the new procedures and show attendees how to qualify.
