Profile

Award-winning freelance editor specializing in fiction and nonfiction for young readers.

Email: editor@erindellamattia.com

I provide a range of editorial services including developmental editing,
copy editing, and proofreading to publishers, self-publishing authors, and aspiring authors.

Children’s books are my specialty and passion. Since launching my freelance editing business in 2022, I have copy edited and proofread books for all age categories, from picture books and chapter books to YA novels. With Second Story Press, I have extensive experience as a developmental editor of feminist middle grade nonfiction. Because of the quality of my work, they also invited me to co-author a middle grade biography,
Undaunted Ursula Franklin: Activist, Educator, Scientist (2024).

I am very lucky to have edited a number of children’s books about social activism, women in STEM, and mental health—all topics that I’m passionate about. But I work on lighthearted books too; for example, I recently copy edited a nonfiction book on angel numbers for Tangerine Press (imprint of Scholastic Inc.). My secondary specialty as an editor is New Age texts, and, for the Australian publisher Rockpool Publishing, I have been the lead editor on several oracle decks as well as a tarot guide and a witchcraft book. Other past clients include Common Deer Press, Owlkids Books, Kids Can Press, Soho Teen, Breakwater Books, and Nevermore Press.

I excel at both high-level stylistic edits and soft-touch copy edits and I tailor my edits to suit the needs of each individual writer and manuscript. I strive to practise consent-based editing, which uses open communication, flexibility, empowerment, and boundaries to create a positive editing experience for both author and editor.

I welcome you to email me or visit my website to learn more about how we can work together.

I earned a Certificate in Publishing at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University), where I also completed my MA in Literatures of Modernity. I have a BA in English and Creative Writing from York University, and I also spent several years studying in the University of Toronto’s English doctoral program.
