Adrienne Montgomerie named 2011 Lee d’Anjou Volunteer of the Year

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Toronto, June 23, 2011—Kingston, Ontario-based editor Adrienne Montgomerie has received the 2011 Lee d’Anjou Volunteer of the Year Award from the Editors’ Association of Canada (EAC).

Montgomerie was recognized for her tireless dedication and enthusiasm in launching a new Kingston-based EAC twig. Twigs are new ventures that aim to serve EAC members outside of the association’s branch cities. Recognizing that Kingston was just one location in which local colleagues were gathering to host and participate in industry events, Montgomerie was integral in developing the twig, from conception through to recruiting volunteers and organizing regular meetings and guest speakers.

“As the driving force behind the creation of the Kingston twig, Adrienne’s willingness to put in hours of volunteer work has transformed the lives of editors in and around Kingston,” said EAC President Michelle Boulton. “The Kingston twig is well-organized, full of enthusiasm and serves as an example of how this can be done well.”

For Montgomerie, the highlight of starting the twig has been the sense of diversity and community it offers. “[The] people are the fun part,” she said. “They are veterans and newbies; experts and generalists; working for themselves and for employers; editing textbooks, websites, novels, annual reports and everything in-between. We laugh at punctuation together, coach each other on client- and author-relations, and learn together.”

Montgomerie has also written newsletter articles, edited EAC’s recently updated Copy Editing: Meeting Professional Editorial Standards and is heading up the association’s website revitalization task force. In addition to all her volunteer work, Montgomerie also obtained the Certified Copy Editor designation while simultaneously working full-time and moving her family—and business—from Parry Sound to Kingston.

Montgomerie’s award was announced with EAC’s President’s Award for Volunteer Service, presented at the association’s conference on May 28 in Vancouver.

Established in 2010, EAC’s President’s Award for Volunteer Service recognizes outstanding service to the organization by member volunteers.
