1. EAC CERTIFICATION: Register this month!
Registration for the 2012 certification tests opens on July 23.
The Proofreading and Structural Editing exams will be offered on November 17 in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. The discounted fee for EAC members is $400 to write one test or $750 to write both tests.
To register, visit the certification page of the website.
Order your Certification Study Guides!
Each Study Guide contains a practice test with answer keys and studying tips. The practice tests help you develop your test-taking skills and show you what the real test is like. Preparing mentally is just as important as practising your editing skills, especially if you haven’t written an exam recently.
To order a Study Guide, visit the publications page.
Follow a study plan!
Begin preparing early. Whether you work alone or with a group, set aside regular study time.
Work through the Study Guide and Meeting Professional Editorial Standards, and review your reference books. In addition, you can increase your skills by taking courses. Time yourself when you take the practice test—you may find that you need to increase your speed to finish the test in the allotted time.
Enjoy the process! Working through the study materials is a valuable professional development exercise.

3. MEMBER COMMUNICATION: National member survey coming soon
This summer EAC’s member communication committee will launch a revised national membership survey that will serve as the new baseline survey for the association. The revised survey is now more streamlined than in previous years and easier to complete. It is designed to gather data on how much members charged/were paid in 2011. The survey will also gauge member satisfaction with EAC’s activities, programs and services.
Keep an eye on your inbox for your invitation to participate in EAC’s 2012 National Membership Survey.
4. TWIGS: KWG year-end garden party
EAC’s Kitchener-Waterloo-Guelph twig (KWG) wrapped for the summer with a lovely garden party hosted by Krysia P. Lear. The potluck attracted members and non-members alike, and the twig’s incoming coordinator, Emily Dockrill Jones, gave a mini presentation on editing for the web. Twig volunteers were thanked for their contributions, each receiving a card and a beautiful bookmark. Snacks were eaten, stories were told and laughs were shared! We look forward to the KWG get-togethers in the fall.

5. GET INVOLVED: Feedback and volunteers wanted
Volunteering is a benefit of membership and it’s the backbone of the association. Consider enriching your EAC experience by getting involved today. Volunteering has many benefits for the association, but it can be beneficial to your career as well. EAC member volunteers work with influential members of the publishing and communications industries, learn new skills, expand their portfolios and boost their career options. We’re also looking for member feedback on a number of EAC initiatives.
WANTED!
Bilingual Editor-in-Chief, Active Voice/Voix active
EAC’s national newsletter, Active Voice/Voix active, urgently needs a bilingual editor-in-chief to oversee issue planning and production, and engage in the dialogue between the English- and French-language editors. If you have the right background and interest, or if you can suggest another member who might, please contact Adrienne Montgomerie, director_communications@editors.ca.
Writer, Voix active
Active Voice is looking for writers for a new feature on neologisms in French. If you’re interested in this project, please write directly to the French editor, Carolyne Roy, at voix.active@reviseurs.ca.
Make volunteering fun and easier
Our volunteer management committee seeks motivated and experience volunteer organizers. But we won’t ask you to organize anything. We want to pick your brains! This year, we’re going to launch an EAC volunteer portal, a place where all of us can find the right volunteering opportunity easily. What should it look like? How should it work? How can it be fun? Put your experience to the test. Contact Micaela Hardy-Moffat at branchservices@editors.ca to get involved.
More services and benefits!
Want more services and benefits? Yes! Each new membership benefit and service is negotiated with the supplier. While we have lots of ideas and suggestions for additional services, we need help negotiating something all EAC members will appreciate. That’s where you come in. Want to work with us to set a few great deals up? Join the member services committee. Contact Micaela Hardy-Moffat at branchservices@editors.ca to get involved.
Feedback, ODE Task Force
The task force examining the Online Directory of Editors (ODE) seeks your input. The team wants to hear about your successes (and any frustrations) with the ODE. Does your listing generate inquiries and assignments? Tell us what works, so we can keep or improve those features. How is the ODE working for your clients? Contact us if you would like to survey your clients or prospects about how the ODE serves them and how they would like it to work. We have a list of questions to get your conversation started. To offer your comments, please email Adrienne Montgomerie, director_communications@editors.ca.
Testers, Website Revitalization Task Force
The association’s website is undergoing a major restructuring this month. If you’re interested in testing the relaunched site, please email Adrienne Montgomerie, director_communications@editors.ca.

7. CONFERENCE 2012: Conference session notes now available
Handouts and presentations for many of the sessions at EAC’s 2012 conference in Ottawa are now available for download on the conference sessions page.
