1. CONFERENCE 2008: A rousing success!
Editors from across Canada congregated at Edmonton’s Shaw Conference Centre from June 6 to 8 for a mix of business, pleasure, education and interaction as we explored the editing profession from a global perspective. Conference 2008: Editing in the Global Village had something for everyone—from the entertaining opening reception to Ruth Kelly’s engaging keynote address on the business of magazine publishing, David Albahari and Jalal Barzanji’s riveting discourse of writing and editing in exile, and the brand new Editors’ Café. At the conference banquet, Saeko Usukawa received the 2007 Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence and Edmonton’s poet laureate, Ted Blodgett, had us pondering anacolutha, while comedienne Barbara North left us laughing into the night, ensuring that we’d never hear Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti” without thinking of its grammatical construction again.
We’re thrilled to report that registration for Conference 2008 exceeded our expectations. Editing in the Global Village proved to be so popular, in fact, that EAC saw its first conference gate crasher! Attendees—legitimate or otherwise—agree that Conference 2008 was one of EAC’s best yet. Thanks to all of the volunteers, presenters and attendees who helped to make the 2008 conference a huge success. We hope to see you in Toronto for Conference 2009: Celebrating the Past, Charting the Future: The 30th Anniversary Conference.

2. 2008 AGM: EAC awards Anita Jenkins honorary life membership
Longtime Prairie Provinces branch member Anita Jenkins was awarded honorary life membership in the association at this year’s annual general meeting in Edmonton. She was described by her nominating branch as “a mentor, coach and encourager of young talent; a tireless maker of lists and recruiter of volunteers; and a leader who sets a fine example and invites others to follow.” Like several of her fellow EACers, Anita was clearly emotional as she accepted the honour following a standing ovation. Congratulations, Anita!
Weren’t able to make it to the AGM? You can read the agenda and supporting documentation on the 2008 AGM page in the Members’ Area of the website. All motions listed on the agenda were passed. EAC members can expect to see draft minutes of the meeting on the website this summer.
3. ELECTIONS: New national executive council and national committees
The 2008–09 national executive council took office in June. Here’s who was elected by EAC members at the AGM in Edmonton on June 7:
President: Moira White, NCR (returning for a second term)
Vice-president: Michelle Boulton, SN (new to the position)
Secretary: Mary Anne Carswell, TO (formerly Toronto branch representative)
Treasurer: Greg Ioannou, TO (returning for a third term)
Member-at-large: Gaëlle Chevalier, TO (new to the position)
Member-at-large: Krysia P. Lear, TO (returning for a second term)
The executive council also includes the following members who are not elected at the AGM:
Past president: Maureen Nicholson, BC (returning for a second term)
BC branch representative: Dania Sheldon (returning for a second term)
PP branch representative: Paul Payson (new to the position)
SN branch representative: Michelle Boulton (returning for a third term)

5. ONLINE DIRECTORY OF EDITORS: Don’t lose your listing!
More than 200 EAC members have already paid for their listing in the online directory, the official advertising directory of association members for use by clients, employers and colleagues. Don’t delay signing up! Unpaid listings will be removed from the directory beginning July 1.
Payment of an annual online directory entry fee was required effective May 1, 2008. The entry fee, which is payable by June 30, is $75 plus GST (a prorated entry fee applies for new entries between July 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009). You can pay online or by mail or fax.

6. PROMOTE YOURSELF: Updated member website logo
The national office is pleased to announce that the 2008–09 member website logo is now available. As a current member of the association you are invited to promote your professional affiliation with EAC on your business or personal website with this specially designed logo. Please refer to the Member website logo guidelines for more information on appropriate use and to acquire the logo files.
