Profile

My love of editing and formatting springs from a desire to create order, to instill symmetry and elegance into the world, and to form the most effective path of understanding between people: this is both a personal philosophy and an approach to publications. I work hard to ensure that whatever I do is of the highest quality, that the end result is as effective and as pleasing as it can be.

After ten years travelling the world, I began my career as a freelance writer, editor, and formatter in 2000. Since then, I have edited documents in a number of fields, including:

  • •    Nursing
  • •    Oncology
  • •    Computer Science
  • •    Psychology
  • •    Rhetoric
  • •    Literary Criticism
  • •    Educational curricula
  • •    Fiction

The works I have edited include articles, theses, public service announcements, NGO reports, webpages, and full-length books. I am well-versed in APA and MLA publication styles, and have also worked with Chicago, AMA, and specialized in-house styles. I have significant experience working with XML, as well as some experience with HTML and CSS.

Other experience

I have worked as a technical writer for the telecommunications industry, winning the STC Techincial Publishing Award award for the Norstar telephone system documentation suite in 1990; a university instructor in literature and critical reading and writing; a reviewer for literary publishers and magazines; and the project manager for the Canada’s Early Women Writers database project, for which I also researched, wrote, and edited XML entries, as well as creating the CSS design.

Education

I have three degrees in English literature (BA–UBC, 1887; MA–UofT, 1988; MPhil–Goldsmiths’ College, U of London, 1996) and have maintained currency in my career through numerous courses, conferences, and workshops on editing, instruction, and digital technology.

Other interests

I lived abroad for 14 years, in five different countries (Finland, England, India, USA, France), and have a basic knowledge of French, and a rusty knowledge of Finnish and Swedish.

I enjoy travelling, and the study of history and cultural anthropology that accompanies extensive travel.  I also enjoy photography, and sharing our journeys with friends in cultural evenings.

I have earned my Basic Pastry and Basic Cuisine certification from L’École Cordon Bleu in Paris, France, and greatly enjoy gourmet cooking for family and friends.
