Announcing Canada’s first Certified Professional Editors

EAC congratulates all candidates of EAC’s certification program. We’re proud to announce the first editors to successfully complete all four certification tests and achieve the designation of Certified Professional Editor (CPE).

“These distinguished editors have demonstrated exemplary skill, experience and dedication, not to mention hard work, to pass all four demanding certification tests,” according to Zofia Laubitz and Barbara Tomlin, co-chairs of EAC’s Certification Steering Committee.

Awarding Canada’s first CPEs marks a milestone for EAC—the achievement of a long-held goal to establish the gold standard for editing in Canada. EAC certification formally recognizes editors who have demonstrated excellence in their profession, paving the way for businesses, governments, organizations and individuals to select and hire editors with proven credentials.

The November 2008 administration also produced the first Certified Structural and Stylistic Editors and 14 new Certified Copy Editors.

The following editors granted permission for their names to be included in this list of candidates who were successful in the November 2008 administration.

“Although EAC’s certification tests have only been offered since 2006, the program had been in the works for a long time before that,” said Zofia and Barbara. “We would like to thank the numerous EAC members who have helped to bring certification to fruition. They too have a right to feel proud today.”

Since the certification tests were launched in 2006, EAC has accredited a total of 4 Certified Professional Editors, 25 Certified Proofreaders, 25 Certified Copy Editors and 5 Certified Structural and Stylistic Editors.
 
EAC will honour the newly certified editors at a ceremony before this year’s annual general meeting, which will be held on Saturday, June 6, in conjunction with the 30^th anniversary conference in Toronto. A full report on the 2008 certification administration will soon be posted in the Members’ Area of the association website.

2009 certification tests

Are you a highly skilled editor looking for a marketing advantage? On November 21 and 23, EAC will offer the Elementary Knowledge of the Publishing Process, Proofreading and Structural and Stylistic Editing tests. The Copy Editing test will be offered next in 2010. Registration opens in July 2009.
