False narratives and misinformation about Indigenous Peoples continue to shape publishing in ways that can reinforce harmful stereotypes, distort Indigenous selfhood, and undermine authentic representation. As editors, we have an important role in recognizing and resisting these narratives throughout the editorial process.
Presented jointly by the Indigenous Editors Association and Editors Canada, this webinar explores how misinformation and disinformation about Indigenous Peoples can appear in manuscripts, editorial decisions, and publishing practices. Participants will learn to distinguish good-faith misunderstandings from bad-faith practices, including racist stereotypes, sensationalized Indigenous trauma, pretendianism, cultural appropriation, and extractive storytelling.
