Editor Profile

Alysa Loring

Profile

I am a freelance editor with 20 years of professional and pro-bono experience on myriad projects, including: children’s books, K-12 educational materials, conference proceedings, and large-scale international science documents and publications (e.g., peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, fact sheets). I have worked one-on-one with professionals to improve the communication of their work (e.g., as presented in public talks, essays, and op-eds) and to translate and edit materials for internal memos, instruction manuals, and personnel files.

My skill-set centers around a combination of structural, stylistic, and copy editing. I particularly enjoy tightening language for clarity and identifying and improving technical and descriptive inconsistencies, in addition to working with Picture Book writers to develop their ideas into full manuscripts. Primarily, I edit children’s books, K–12 curricula, and academic works. I have edited and page-set printed and web-based materials for multiple international science conferences, for such organizations as the American Fisheries Society (Alaska Chapter), the international Comparative Rural Policy Studies (ICRPS) program, and the Arctic Research Consortium of the U.S. (ARCUS).

I have experience as a writing instructor and tutor and have worked with students at high school, undergraduate, and graduate levels. As an instructor, I guide students to develop a strong voice using concise, active language. My work has afforded me the opportunity to work with scientists, educators, students, elders, and culture-bearers from many parts of Alaska and Hawai’i, as well as education, policy, and climate researchers from around the world.

I am always interested in new opportunities and look forward to discussing your editing needs.
