Profile
As an accredited editor with nineteen years’ experience, I provide primarily non-fiction editing and writing services to busineses and self-publishing authors.
I offer structural editing, stylistic editing, copy editing, proofreading, and manuscript assessments, and have written articles and website copy for clients. Topics I’ve worked on include First Nations and the environment, engineering, energy, health, finance, social sciences, outdoor recreation, and children’s fiction. My work has involved an eclectic mix of formats, including product disclosure statements, reports, newsletters, video scripts, a successful application for the designation of one of Canada’s 50 Best Managed Companies, trade non-fiction, memoir, children’s fiction, and even a youth graphic novel. I enjoy working with words and authors, no matter what the subject! Clients have appreciated my flexible and collaborative approach to their hard work.
I am an accredited editor (AE) with the Institute of Professional Editors in Australia, where I lived for ten years, and I have a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in European Studies and a minor in English. I’ve also taken several publishing courses through Toronto Metropolitan University.
Prior to becoming a freelance editor in 2008, I worked as an in-house editor for a superannuation and investment company in Australia. I love learning new things, travelling, and being outdoors. At one point I was fluent in German, having done a year of university study in Germany. In between studying and my editing career, I taught alpine skiing and sailing for many years. When I’m not editing or skiing, you can usually find me rock climbing, hiking, or paddling.
Testimonials
“Jaime is professional. She meets deadlines; she is committed to accuracy; and her work is of high quality. In addition, Jaime has strong verbal communication skills. She is willing and able to clearly explain why certain wording or language doesn’t communicate our desired message and how we can change it. Also, she takes time and care to understand our expectations, and she is able to edit documents while preserving the writer’s style and voice, when this is required.”
–Tammy Nelson, Manager, Administrative Services, Department of Psychiatry, Alberta Health Services
“Jaime is an absolute pleasure to work with. She is very professional in her approach and has the ability to concisely edit content and meet tight timelines with ease. While editing our Canada’s Best Managed Companies application, Jaime had the difficult task of unifying the voice of the document written by multiple authors and cut down text by as much as 90% without losing the intended message. I would have no hesitation bringing Jaime on for another project with Upside or recommending her to other companies.”
–Chris Read, Vice President, Business & Marketing, Upside Engineering
“Jaime was a writing gift to me! She helped me structure and write a book that I was proud of. My book sounds like my voice, and I have not yet had anyone find a single grammatical error! Amazing! She was easy to work with and always professional. I would not write anything again without her.”
–Cara Milne, author, owner of M-Powered Planning
“Jaime was a pleasure to work with, she was easy to reach and we very much felt that she approached our project as if it was her own. She seems to be passionate about her work and she seems to have a keen interest in storytelling, which proved to be a great fit for our creative children’s novel. We would highly recommend Jaime for other projects and would not hesitate to work with her again on future projects of our own.”
–Kurt Wytrykush, author, president of Barking Spider Solutions
