Jane Kirby

I’m an editor, indexer, and writer living in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I’m sought after because of my work at the intersection of academia, the arts, independent journalism, and social justice.

ACADEMIC PUBLISHING EXPERIENCE
I have worked as the Managing Editor of the Journal of Critical Race Inquiry since 2021. I have supported dozens of authors in polishing their articles for publication and refining their ideas for both popular and academic audiences. 

GENERAL PUBLISHING EXPERIENCE
I also bring experience as an academically-informed community journalist passionate about translating complex ideas for the public. I’ve written and edited for several community and social justice-oriented publications, and published the academic-trade crossover book Fired Up About Reproductive Rights in 2017.

EXPERIENCE IN THE CREATIVE SECTOR
I’m also a circus performer and creator with over a decade of experience working with arts organizations in a variety of roles. This work demands discipline, but also creativity, generosity, and flexibility, and I bring this spirit to my editorial work. 

EDITORIAL TRAINING
My formal training in editing comes from completion of the Publishing Certificate at Toronto Metropolitan University, where I was the winner of the Charles Oberdorf Memorial Award. I continue to pursue professional development opportunities through Editor’s Canada. 

INTERDISCIPLINARY BACKGROUND
I’ve worked extensively in Gender Studies, both as an editor/writer and with community organizations. I hold an MA in International Development Studies from Dalhousie University, a BAH in Development Studies and Environmental Studies from Queen’s University, and have completed graduate-level coursework in Cultural Studies at Queen’s University.  I’m especially familiar with these disciplines as well as with Sociology, Critical Race Studies, and the Humanities, but I’ve also worked with engineers and economists!

INTERESTS
I’m especially enthusiastic about working on projects that intersect with one of my many interests. In addition to those listed above, I’d be thrilled to work on your fitness memoir, your vegan cookbook, your health and wellness guide, or your hiking guidebook.
