Editor Profile

Krystina Mierins

Profile

I work with authors and organizations to help them refine text so that it conveys their ideas in a compelling way. I provide a range of editing services, including structural editing, stylistic editing, copyediting, rewriting and proofreading. I draw on a breadth of experience derived from the academic, private and non-profit sectors in which I have enjoyed long-term working relationships with both publishers and authors for projects ranging in complexity and frequently involving many contributors—designers, illustrators, artists, translators and/or multiple authors.

During my career, I have worked in Canada and the United States and am accustomed to shifting between Canadian and American English usage. I have also worked with clients in Europe, Asia, and Africa, many of whom are writing in English as a second language (ESL).

What sets me apart:

I take a sensitive approach to my work with authors because I understand writing can be a messy and emotional undertaking. A lot of work and time has been dedicated to a project and the editing process can be arduous. I work closely with writers to ensure their work is well organized and presents ideas clearly and persuasively, while also meeting the high demands of publishers, readers and clients. I use my skills to catch errors, raise questions about missing or convoluted information, reconstruct wordy sentences, propose solutions to writing problems and maintain a consistent style.

About me:

I have worked as an editor and writer for private and non-profit organizations in Canada and the United States. In addition to this, my writing has been featured in newspapers, magazines, academic journals, and museum catalogues. Prior to this, I worked in museums and galleries following the completion of my master’s degree in art history.

My experience:

I have edited articles, books, grant applications, translations, autobiographical and biographical texts, trade non-fiction, didactic text for museum exhibitions, museum publications, and promotional and marketing materials.

The subject matter of these projects has included:

The Arts and Humanities: Visual art, art history, design, performance art, music, film studies, history, literature

Architecture: Garden design, urban design, repurposing elements of the built environment, refurbishing, green technology, architectural history

Social Sciences: Political science, business, economics, psychology, conflict transformation and peace studies

Health and Wellbeing: Mental health, healthcare, pain management, geriatric care

Cultural Contexts: Nineteenth-century France, World War II and the Holocaust, Contemporary Canada, Indigenous and First Nations Peoples

Endorsements:

I could always count on Krystina. She is a conscientious editor, has a keen eye for detail, and comes through in a pinch! I can highly recommend her as an editor and colleague. We worked remotely between Los Angeles and Toronto, but I always felt she was there in the office with us. She’s a true team player, and I highly valued her contributions and opinions. Anyone who works with Krystina can have confidence in her work and will enjoy spending time with her, too.

 – Carrie Paterson, Publisher and Editor in chief, DoppelHouse Press, Los Angeles, USA

I have had very positive experiences working with Krystina on various projects over a number of years.  I highly recommend her for editing work, as well as assisting with advanced research.  She offers valuable insights and is well positioned to work on a wide range of subject areas.  Krystina is also highly personable.  Her commitment to high standards in writing and research make Krystina an excellent resource for any author.

– Alison McQueen, Professor of Art History, McMaster University

I am absolutely impressed with Krystina’s work! Not only that she edited my project proposal thoroughly, noticing even the tiniest details, but she also gave me many useful comments. I usually have to review an editor’s changes very carefully as they unintentionally alter the meaning. In Krystina’s case, however, I did not have to do any further modifications. Moreover, I was working with a tight deadline and she did everything quickly yet professionally, not making any compromises when it comes to the quality of her work. My wholehearted recommendations!
