Profile
My expertise is in editing grant applications, promotion & tenure dossiers, and research article manuscripts, drawing on the principles of plain language and design. I work with artists and researchers as they articulate their goals to an audience of their peers.
With a PhD in English Literature, experience reviewing arts & culture grants for the Vancouver Foundation, and success in editing ~$4M of research funding proposals, I specialize in editing artists’ funding applications and academic work in the health sciences, education, social sciences, and humanities. I also write a monthly column for UniversityAffairs.ca called “Ask Dr. Editor.”
My clients have won grants from NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, CFI, NFRF, FRQ, and MSFHR (now Michael Smith Health Research BC), as well as health charities, philanthropic funders, and small, niche funding agencies. I bring expertise in the SSHRC Insight Grant (IG), Insight Development Grant (IDG), and the SSHRC Partnership stream: the Partnership Engage Grant (PEG), Connection Grant, Partnership Development Grant (PDG), and Partnership Grant (PG). I also have experience support successful applicants to the CIHR Project and CIHR Catalyst competitions and to NSERC Alliance grants.
In addition to grant editing, I also provide editing services for manuscripts including journal articles, book chapters, monographs and minigraphs, as well as tenure and promotion dossiers.
I have taught academic writing for Editors Canada and, in the states, the Editorial Freelancers’ Association. I have a strong background editing in disciplines including First Nations and Indigenous studies, occupational science, occupational therapy, rehabilitation sciences, health sciences, kinesiology, anthropology, sociology, family studies, media studies, communications, literary studies, film studies, theatre studies, medieval studies, classics, education studies, pedagogy, teaching and learning, Canadian studies, religious studies, Jewish studies, Bible studies, Asian studies, migration studies, art history, political science, public humanities, public scholarship, business studies, management studies, creative writing, fine arts, research-creation, environmental studies, french, spanish, geography, urban studies, gender studies, history, history of science, international relations, information studies and information sciences, queer theory and queer studies.
