Profile
Monique owns and operates Crow Spell Editing & Writing. She holds a Master of Arts in Religious Studies (University of Calgary) and a First Class Honours Bachelor of Arts in Ancient and Medieval History with a minor in Museum and Heritage Studies (University of Calgary). She is a member of Editors Canada and has received editing certification through Mount Royal University (December 2025). She co-edited The Kindread Coast with Caroline Lavoie, a YA horror anthology published by Black Cat Books (Victoria, BC) in September 2025.
Monique is mixed European and Red River Métis, descending from the Riel, Poitras, Fisher, Grant, Gingras, Trottier, McGillis, and Laframboise families. A practitioner of living in relation across (colonial) anthropogenic boundaries, she lives in humble gratitude and respect on K’ómoks, Qualicum, and Snaw’naw’as territories.
Monique takes a relationship-first approach to editing by getting to know you, your work, and what you want from the editing process.
Monique is happy to fine-tune a wide variety of writing projects, from website copy to company reports. She has a special interest in:
* Humanities and social sciences essays, theses, dissertations, and journal articles
* Museum, heritage, and cultural institution literature
* Indigenous fiction, non-fiction, academic papers, articles, documents, and grant proposals
* Religious, spiritual, occult, philosophical, and metaphysical themes in fiction and non-fiction
* Feminist and environmental literature
* Historical fiction and non-fiction
* Horror, fantasy, magical realism, and other speculative fiction
* YA fiction
* Creative non-fiction
* Short stories
* ESL (English Second Language) fiction and non-fiction involving any of the above
Aside from misty and moody forests, Monique’s happy place is in the enchanting headspace of editing all manner of magical, mystical, and meandering manuscripts.
