Profile
I am a writer and editor. As a writer, I know what goes into a story, what the rules are (and when to bend or break them), and how to structure a story in the most effective way. I also know how vulnerable writing is, so as an editor I approach the work with empathy and care. And perhaps most importantly, I know in my bones just how important storytelling is, and I can’t think of a better life than helping to create stories and get them out into the world.
As an editor, I have experience working with books (fiction and non-fiction), academic papers, journal articles, short stories, websites, scripts, and grant proposals. I help to: diagnose the sticking points in a story and find ways to make it flow smoother; find and maintain your voice; ensure the story is stylistically and grammatically cohesive, prioritizing how the story comes across to the reader; identify the inclusivity and accessibility of the language used; confirm the grammar and finer linguistic details are correct.
Knowing the power of words, I edit consciously and contientiously, ensuring the language used reflects the writer’s empathy and balances it with the reader’s to ensure the point is made well and compassionately.
As a writer, I am primarily a playwright. I have had work produced across the country, from the Little Mountain Lion One-Act Showcase in Vancouver to the Halifax inFringement Festival. My play impressions of a new home was commissioned for the global 2023 Climate Change Theatre Action movement, and was performed in India and the UK. It was published in the CCTA anthology Good Things Must Begin in 2024. In early March 2024, my play Different Animals was presented at the Sound Off Deaf Theatre Festival as a virtual staged reading and talkback. This play is bilingual English and American Sign Language, involving both Deaf and hearing cast and crew.
I have also taught creative writing in a variety of places, from a summit on youth mental health in Vancouver to a speculative fiction workshop with the North Vancouver Arts Council.
I completed the Editing Certificate from Simon Fraser University in 2021, and graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia in 2016. I also have a BA in Theatre and International Development Studies from the University of King’s College in Halifax, NS (2009).
