Stephanie Fysh

I’ve been editing and proofreading both fiction and nonfiction for over 25 years. My clients are a mix of established publishers — from small Canadian literary presses to large international scholarly publishing firms — and independent authors who are self-publishing or seeking contracts.

For fiction, I’m currently accepting new clients only for stylistic and copy editing. I work in most genres but am actively interested in long-form fantasy and science fiction.  Are you a series writer? My services include world bible (series bible) creation and maintenance!

On the non-fiction side, I work as a stylistic editor, copy editor, proofreader, and back-of-the-book indexer. I have considerable experience in social sciences, biography/memoir, history, current events, popular science, art exhibition catalogues, and translated books. With many a college and university textbook under my belt across a vast subject range, I am also interested in supporting faculty in open-source or custom projects. And if the only thing you need edited is your documentation, I will not only fix that up for you, I’ll enjoy doing it.

Students: I don’t take on any thesis or dissertation editing without a detailed sign-off from your supervisor. Please talk to them about what they’re willing to agree to before contacting me.

For many years, alongside freelancing, I taught copy editing and proofreading in and co-coordinated the Toronto Metropolitan University Publishing certificate program. I am also a former director and chair of the Book and Periodical Council, an umbrella group for Canadian book and magazine publishing associations. I’ve sometimes talked to writers’ groups and book clubs about the editing and publishing process.
