1. NATIONAL OFFICE: EAC seeks new executive director

EAC is seeking a national executive director. The executive director reports to the national executive council and is responsible for the association’s consistent and timely achievement of its mission and objectives. He or she manages the association office and staff; administers the national finances, programs and projects; and coordinates the work of national committees. Location: Toronto.

The application deadline is Friday, September 5, 2008, at 3 p.m. EST.

2. VOLUNTEERS WANTED: Enrich your EAC experience

Volunteering is a benefit of membership, and it’s the backbone of the association. Here’s your chance to contribute to some of the association’s exciting initiatives! Develop your skills, profile and networks.

Beta testers for EAC’s new Online Directory of Editors needed

The new, completely redesigned Online Directory of Editors (ODE) is coming soon, and the development team needs your help. The Online Job Tools Committee is looking for beta testers to try out the new system and tell us what works and what doesn’t. 

Any member can volunteer. You can be a computer novice or expert or someone in between. You can have a current listing in the ODE or not. You can be new to editing and EAC or experienced or in between. You can be on PC or Mac, high-speed or dial-up, Firefox or Internet Explorer or Safari … Are you getting the picture?

You do need to be able to commit several hours during August 18–21, again during September 2–6 and ideally a bit of time on September 8. The committee especially needs beta testers who regularly need to find (sub)contractors or colleagues, and it would like to recruit some who work in government or businesses other than publishing. You will be provided with clear instructions.

Conference 2009

Planning for the 2009 conference has begun, and the Conference Committee is looking for volunteers in the Toronto area. Committee members are needed for tasks ranging from promotion to party planning to research to coordination of conference volunteers. Help EAC celebrate its 30th anniversary in style.

Calling all designers!

Are you a creative thinker? Can you find and execute innovative solutions? Do you have experience in design, layout and typography for corporate branding, marketing, advertising and digital media?

Show EAC what you’ve got! We’re looking for designers to develop a logo for EAC’s 2009 conference and 30th anniversary celebration, as well as marketing materials, corporate stationery and much more. If you’re ready to show off your design and production skills, contact EAC communications coordinator Michelle Ou.

Marketing and public relations

Do you think EAC is an outstanding organization and wish more people knew about the great things we do? Would you like editors in Canada to have a higher profile in the communications and business sectors?

Yes? Then consider becoming a member of EAC’s Marketing and Public Relations Committee. We need your ideas and talents!

Some of the initiatives currently underway include the merchandising of coffee mugs and T-shirts, promoting certification, getting Google to link more often with the EAC site and increasing our membership.

If you have a background in public relations—or just wish you had—and are interested in helping out, send an email to committee chair Barb Adamski.


The Publications Committee is looking for energetic and inquisitive members. Over the next months the committee will be developing a strategic publishing plan for EAC and initiating different projects, including a revision of Editing Canadian English and Meeting Editorial Standards. It will also investigate and propose a production and manufacturing process for EAC publications going forward.

If you have experience or would like to gain further experience in publishing planning, book development, title management or production, and are definitely able to dedicate some time, contact committee chair David Jolliffe.

4. CERTIFICATION: Have your say in Active Voice

The editors of Active Voice want to know your thoughts about EAC Certification. Are you planning to sit for one of the tests in the future? If so, which one? Is becoming certified important to you? Or not? Why? If you have already taken one of the tests, do you have any advice you could share with editors who have not yet “taken the plunge”?

Your comments may be featured in the Fall 2008 issue of Active Voice, which will also include an in-depth interview with EAC Certification Chair Zofia Laubitz.
