1. TOM FAIRLEY AWARD: Deadline for nominations fast approaching

December is a busy month for most of us. In all of the hustle and bustle it might be easy to forget about your nomination for the Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence. That’s why we’re sending a friendly reminder to you to help us shine a light on great editors by submitting your nomination by Friday, January 11. The deadline for supporting documentation is Friday, January 25.

The recipient of the 2012 Tom Fairley Award for Editorial Excellence will receive a $2,000 cash prize and will be recognized at EAC’s 2013 conference banquet in Halifax on June 8. What’s more, finalists will receive a cash prize of $500 each, because being shortlisted for the Tom Fairley Award is also recognition of outstanding editorial performance.

Please spread this message far and wide. Nominees don’t have to be members of EAC and self-nominations are encouraged.

For complete nomination instructions and other information about the award, visit the Tom Fairley Award page.

MORE THAN BOOKS!

Editors know that the fine art of editing extends beyond books and print media. While EAC’s Tom Fairley Award has been awarded to many outstanding book editors in the 28 years since it was created, we encourage nominations for a variety of written projects. Whether it’s a magazine, corporate or government report, software documentation or a book, we want to hear about it. When it comes to editing, the variety of material is limitless!

2. EAC BLOG: The Editors’ Weekly is launched

EAC has a new blog! The Editors’ Weekly, which launched last month, will feature posts in both of Canada’s official languages on a wide range of topics of interest to editors and lovers of language. Authors of EAC blog posts are invited, but if you have an idea for a post that you would like to propose, send an email to Susan Bond, the managing editor.

You will see names both familiar and new posting to this blog. While most articles will be by EAC members, we will also invite non-member guests to share their editorial perspectives. We encourage all members to read the weekly blogs and comment. Our goal is to start conversations with a large community of editors and communicators and those interested in language.

Look for new posts each Tuesday at http://blog.editors.ca.

3. MEMBER NEWS: A round of applause!

Elizabeth McLachlan, Prairie Provinces branch, has had her book Herbert Has Lots for a Buck, published by NeWest Press. The book describes 12 small Prairie towns that have lost population but are finding ways to renew themselves.

Do you have a recent achievement? Let us help tell the world about it on EAC’s Member News page. If you have member news to share, contact the member news coordinator.

4. ACTIVE VOICE: Contributors wanted

The French editing team of Active Voice (AV) is looking for writers to review the new Dictionnaire de la langue française, available at franqus.ca. If you’re currently using the free trial of the dictionary, or if you intend to do so, consider sharing your experience with your colleagues. If you’re interested in writing a review, let AV’s French editing team know and we may publish your article in the next issue.

The French editing team is also interested in entertaining AV readers with word games, such as crosswords and word searches, hidden word puzzles and sentences to correct. If the idea of games and word play enchants you, please contact us. We are confident that our readers will appreciate your contribution.

If either (or both!) of these activities inspires you, please send an email to the French editor of Active Voice at voix.active@reviseurs.ca.

5. CONFERENCE 2013: Update

The website is now live for Between the Lines, our first conference ever to be held east of Quebec. The Indexing Society of Canada (ISC/SCI) will also head east in 2013, hosting their annual conference in Halifax in conjunction with ours. Want to get early-bird prices? We expect to add registration details to the site in January. Meanwhile, drop by to learn more about the wining, dining and shopping that await you just steps from the conference location in the historic Lord Nelson Hotel. The website also features bios of keynote speakers Donna Morrissey and Robert MacNeil.

6. NATIONAL OFFICE: Holiday closure

It’s that time of year again! The national office will close for the holidays on Friday, December 21. During the office closure, we will not be processing membership renewals (memberships will not lapse during the closure) and new ODE profiles or @editors.ca email addresses. We will also not be shipping Editing Canadian English, the Certification Study Guides, magnets or Eight-Step Editing/EAC Grammar Tips posters, but we look forward to serving you when the office reopens on Thursday, January 3.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season. See you in 2013!

The EAC national e-news update is produced on behalf of the national executive council by the national office.
