2. EAC ENGLISH WEBSITE LAUNCH CONTEST: Winners announced

We invited EAC members to take part in a short story contest to kick off the launch of EAC’s new English website in February. Entrants put their creative muscles to the test to write a short story that completed the following opening:

“The last thing he said to me before he left Carlton Street to go to Granville Island was ‘My dear, I want to give you this dictionary. Give it to her only when she really needs it.’ It was a large dictionary, and when I opened its pages … “

The national executive council whittled the entries down to a shortlist of five stories that were posted on the Interactive Voice discussion forum. Following a free vote by EAC members we are pleased to announce the winners.

First place: Lee Hunter, NCR (Story #13)
Second place: Carolyn Bishop, TO (Story #5)
Third place: Heather Ebbs, NCR (Story #2)

For their efforts, Heather picks up a Conference 2006 t-shirt, Carolyn receives the new Canadian Oxford Dictionary and Lee walks away with our grand prize, a year’s free membership in EAC. Congratulations to our winners and thanks to all who participated.

3. NEW GST RATE: How does the reduced GST rate affect your membership fee?

The new 6% GST rate went into effect on July 1, 2006. According to the Canada Revenue Agency, “If GST/HST becomes payable on or after July 1, 2006 without having been paid before that day, the 6% GST rate … will apply,” and “If GST/HST becomes payable or is paid before July 1, 2006, the 7% GST rate … will apply.”

How does this affect your membership renewal fee? If your first renewal notice was issued on or before June 30, 2006, the old 7% GST will apply, even if you submit your payment after July 1. If your first renewal notice was issued on or after July 1, 2006, the new 6% GST will apply.

TIP: For more information on the GST rate reduction, access Canada Revenue Agency’s Excise Tax Act info sheets online.
