1. CERTIFICATION: Take the test that proves your editing skills

Do you want to stand out from the crowd? Validate and affirm your editing skills? Help raise the status of editing and editors in Canada?

To succeed in today’s competitive job market, you need to demonstrate your expertise. EAC certification provides professional editors with official recognition of their high level of knowledge and skill—and a marketing advantage.

EAC is offering certification tests in stylistic editing and copy editing on Saturday, November 19, 2011, in major centres across Canada. The proofreading and the structural editing tests will be offered in 2012.

What’s new?

See EAC’s certification website for more information on the benefits of certification and preparing for the tests.

DON’T FORGET! Registration closes on October 24, 2011.

2. CONFERENCE: Save the date to go wild (June 1–3, 2012)

EAC’s national conference is coming to Ottawa and the National Capital Region branch is playing host. People from coast-to-coast-to-coast with a passion for words will gather in Ottawa for three days of professional development, networking and fun.

The official theme is The Landscape of Canadian Language: Word Nerds Gone Wild. We’ll explore and examine what goes into our editing profession in this really big country of ours. Wherever we reside, we all have one thing in common—we love words. So join us Roughing it in the Bush. Let’s welcome others who hear The Call of the Wild. Together, we will go Where the Wild Things Are. After all, Ottawa is the home of the federal government—and it’s a jungle out there.

3. MEMBER NEWS: A round of applause!

Kudos to BC branch member Heidi Greco whose manuscript, Shrinking Violets, was co-winner of Quattro Books’ annual novella competition. Since the book was released at the end of April 2011, Heidi has presented it at Montreal’s Blue Met Festival and at launch events in Toronto and London, ON; Saskatoon, SK; Red Deer, AB; and White Rock, BC.

Congratulations also go to Toronto branch member Susan Hughes. Her book, Case Closed: Nine Mysteries Unlocked by Modern Science, is a finalist for the Norma Fleck Award for Canadian Children’s Non-fiction through the Canadian Children’s Book Centre. In addition, her newest non-fiction book for children, Off to Class: Incredible and Unusual Schools Around the World, has been published this fall by Owlkids Books.

In June 2011, for the second year in a row, Prairie Provinces branch member Karen Virag received a Golden Leaf Award of Merit for Overall Publication from the Canadian Education Press Association (CEPA), for Just in Time, a newsletter that she writes and edits for the Diversity, Equity and Human Rights Committee of the Alberta Teachers’ Association. CEPA represents teacher association presses across Canada. The theme of this award-winning issue was transgender.

Also in June 2011, Karen Virag received an honourable mention in the short article category by the Professional Writers’ Association of Canada for “The Naked Truth About Raw,” her article about the raw food movement. The article was published in the winter 2010 issue of The Tomato, an Edmonton culinary magazine.

4. EAC LEADERSHIP: New council and committee chairs now in office

EAC’s national executive council and national committee chairs started their 2011–12 term on September 6. Visit the national executive council and committee chair pages to learn more about EAC’s leadership.

Want to enrich your association membership? Volunteering is a benefit of membership and it’s the backbone of the association. Consider joining one of the association’s national committees today. Contact a council member or committee chair for more information.

5. NATIONAL OFFICE: Staff news

The national office is pleased to introduce a new team member. Micaela Hardy-Moffat joined the national office staff as EAC’s new branch services coordinator on September 13.

Micaela recently moved to Toronto from Montreal, where she studied studio art at Concordia. Having lived in four of Canada’s provinces, she is looking forward to liaising with branches and twigs across the country. In Montreal, Micaela had the pleasure of working on a variety of community art projects, with the hopes of promoting the arts and education to people of all ages. Though a true lover of words, she sometimes can’t help her guilty pleasure of sitting in front of the television for an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

6. EXTERNAL: EAC welcomes the Canadian Creative Writers and Writing Programs Association

EAC welcomes the Canadian Creative Writers and Writing Programs Association (CCWWP). Although CCWWP’s mandate is not editing, it recognizes that many professional editors are also authors and teachers. Plans for CCWWP’s 2012 conference in Toronto include a panel discussion on literary journal editing. For more information, visit CCWWP’s website.

The EAC national e-news update is produced on behalf of the national executive council by the national office.
