Dear members and student affiliates,
Following member concerns about the draft Editors Canada strategic plan that was presented at last year’s annual general meeting (AGM), we opened a member consultation on the draft plan in December 2025.
Feedback received
A working group of four directors on the national executive council (NEC) reviewed and consolidated all of the feedback received on the strategic plan. In total, the group identified 170 distinct items from the 37 responses submitted.
Working group recommends not proceeding with the current draft plan
Due to the significant volume of feedback received, the working group has determined that it will not be possible to revise the current draft in time to present it for voting at the upcoming AGM. After careful consideration, the group recommended to the NEC that Editors Canada not proceed with updating and finalizing the existing draft strategic plan.
This recommendation was based on several key factors.
- The extent of feedback received would require substantial revisions, and completing this work would likely take many additional months of volunteer effort.
- The members of the working group do not have direct experience in developing strategic plans, which raises the risk that revisions may not be incorporated correctly.
- The draft plan itself was originally developed approximately 1 year ago, and the additional time required for revisions would mean the plan could be between 18 months and 2 years old upon completion. Given the pace of change in areas such as AI and other emerging priorities, portions of the plan could be outdated by that time.
The group recommended that the proposed plan and the feedback and insights gathered through this consultation be preserved and used as a strong foundation for the development of a new strategic plan.
NEC votes in favour of suspending work on the current draft strategic plan
At its meeting on Sunday, April 26, 2026, the NEC accepted the working group’s recommendation and voted to suspend work on the current draft strategic plan in favour of beginning a new strategic planning process.
We are grateful to Editors Canada members and student affiliates for taking the time to review the draft plan and provide thoughtful feedback. We will keep you updated on the next steps and look forward to your continued engagement and support.
