When Language Hides Responsibility: Passive Voice and Editorial Ethics
This session explores how passive voice shapes meaning, power, and perception across a range of texts and contexts, examines how editorial decisions can either clarify or conceal responsibility, and shows how these choices intersect with the ethical principles outlined in the Professional Editorial Standards. Designed for novice and mid-career editors, this session offers practical strategies for identifying passive constructions and making informed, ethical editorial interventions.
Misinformation, Disinformation, and Indigenous Representation in Editing
This session, presented on behalf of the Indigenous Editors Association, explores the difference between misinformation and disinformation, contrasting good-faith attempts at respectful cultural representation with bad-faith practices such as relying on racist stereotypes, sensationalizing Indigenous trauma, and extractive storytelling. The discussion also addresses authenticity reads, pretendianism, and cultural appropriation. Participants will gain practical tools to better assess intent, support authentic Indigenous representation, and respond thoughtfully to harmful practices in editorial contexts.
Diversifying Services in a Global Content Landscape
Drawing on more than 18 years of experience in editing, translation, audiovisual localization, and language quality assurance, this session invites editors to explore practical and approachable ways to expand their service offerings. Participants will learn how core editorial skills apply in multilingual, international, and audiovisual contexts, and how offering complementary services can help create steadier workflows and more predictable income.
The Critical Editor’s Guide to AI: Judgement Beyond the Hype
This session moves beyond the hype, fear, and anxiety and synthesizes the critical ethics behind AI with the tactical skills needed to combat the mis/disinformation it amplifies. The presenter explores the hidden costs of AI, from data extraction to environmental impact, connecting them directly to the “hallucinations” and bias that editors must catch. You’ll leave not with prompt engineering skills, but with a framework for editorial agency: the critical language to question AI’s impact, the skeptic’s toolkit to verify its output, and the guiding principles to use it—or refuse it—responsibly.
Editing Academic Journals in the Age of Misinformation
This session explores how editors can manage issues related to government censorship, the misuse of AI tools, and the age-old problem of academic fraud. Participants will examine real-world examples and discuss strategies to anticipate and identify issues relevant to the current moment in scholarly publishing and protect the publications they represent.
Freelancing: The First Year
This session guides new freelancers through what to do on day one, week one, month one and the rest, offering a bridge to make that first year more manageable and intentional. From business basics to marketing must-haves, this session sets out a plan for each quarter of the year, including elements that you can do simultaneously (you do not have to have a perfect website before approaching your first client!) Based on my new book The Feisty Freelancer, this webinar will cover the basics, and end with an extended Q&A session where newcomers can ask all their burning questions in a friendly environment.
Working with the Accessibility Standards Canada (ASC) Plain Language Standard
CAN-ASC-3.1:2025-Plain Language, National Standard of Canada was published in October 2025. This presentation is an in depth look at the standard. Members of the ASC Technical Committee for the Plain Language Standard will discuss:

- how the standard responds to some key challenges of the times
How to Support First-Person Storytelling About Mental Health
In this session, we’ll pinpoint strategies for editing stories by people with lived experience of mental health challenges. Techniques like staggered edits and open-ended questions build trust, while judgment flops every time. We’ll review examples of substantive edits from a mental health magazine that spotlights first-person storytelling and discuss which communication styles make mental health messaging more accurate, accessible and fun to read!
