Member news: June 2026

Editors Ottawa–Gatineau members Carolyn Brown and Gael Spivak recently saw four years of work on plain language for science writing come to fruition. In May, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published part 3 of the plain language standard, called ISO 24495-3:2026 – Plain language — Part 3: Science writing. The standard was drafted by an international team of experts in science communication and plain language. They identified common criteria for plain science communication, which are now codified in the standard.

Carolyn and Gael were involved from the beginning of the project through to publication, and Editors Toronto’s Greg Ioannou is on the working group that writes the plain language standards. To learn more, read the press release from the International Plain Language Federation (French version).

Freelance writer, editor and co-editor-in-chief of Editors Toronto’s BoldFace blog, Ruth E. Thaler-Carter, won almost two dozen awards in the 2026 Communications Contest of New Mexico Press Women (NMPW), a regional affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women. She won several awards for writing magazine articles and blog posts, some for publication-editing and one for receiving the most awards! The awards were presented at the 2026 NMPW conference in early May.
