3. TWIG NEWS: Editors Kingston members vote to dissolve twig

At the Editors Kingston annual general meeting on May 13, 2026, all members present voted in favour of dissolving the twig. The twig will officially cease operation on June 30, 2026.

Every member and student affiliate of Editors Canada belongs to a branch or twig that provides a rich array of local programming, professional development and networking opportunities. Editors Kingston members have been given instructions on how to join a new Editors Canada branch or twig that is dedicated to reaching editors and the people who hire them. If you’re an Editors Kingston member who has not received this info, please email the national office at info@editors.ca.

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has contributed to Editors Kingston over the years. Your involvement, support and commitment have been greatly appreciated, and we look forward to continuing to work together within Editors Canada.

7. MEMBER NEWS: A round of applause!

Editors Ottawa–Gatineau members Carolyn Brown and Gael Spivak recently saw four years of work on plain language for science writing come to fruition. In May, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published part 3 of the plain language standard, called ISO 24495-3:2026 – Plain language — Part 3: Science writing. The standard was drafted by an international team of experts in science communication and plain language. They identified common criteria for plain science communication, which are now codified in the standard.

Carolyn and Gael were involved from the beginning of the project through to publication, and Editors Toronto’s Greg Ioannou is on the working group that writes the plain language standards. To learn more, read the press release from the International Plain Language Federation (French version).

Freelance writer, editor and co-editor-in-chief of Editors Toronto’s BoldFace blog, Ruth E. Thaler-Carter, won almost two dozen awards in the 2026 Communications Contest of New Mexico Press Women (NMPW), a regional affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women. She won several awards for writing magazine articles and blog posts, some for publication-editing and one for receiving the most awards! The awards were presented at the 2026 NMPW conference in early May.

Editors Canada Member News is where we share information about members and affiliates who win awards, publish books and make their mark in other important ways.

Do you have an achievement you’d like to share? Are you excited about a new project or opportunity that has come your way? Let us tell the world all about it! Please send your stories to the member news coordinator.

8. NEC: Notes from your national executive council

June is always an exciting month at Editors Canada, and this year was no different. We hope many of you will attend the annual general meeting on June 25.

The May national executive council (NEC) meeting included lively discussion on ongoing projects and a recap of the 2026 conference in Halifax. A big thank you to the organizers for putting on such an engaging and inspiring event!

The NEC met on June 14, 2026, for the last time before breaking for the summer. A summary of the meeting topics will be shared in the July e-news. As usual, there will be no NEC meetings in July or August, and the fall 2026 meeting schedule will be announced in late summer.

On behalf of the NEC, I wish you all a happy, safe summer!

Kaitlin Littlechild
President
