1. CONFERENCE 2011: E-mazing!
What a conference!
It was a year in the making and we’re thrilled with the turnout. Thank you to everyone for attending EAC’s 2011 Conference—Editing in the Age of e-Everything. More than 300 people gathered in Vancouver from May 27 to 29 for a memorable weekend of learning, networking and tweeting. We hope you were inspired by the speakers who presented, the people you met and the ideas that were exchanged.

2. AGM 2011: EAC awards Maureen Nicholson honorary life membership
EAC members voted to award long-time BC branch member and former EAC president Maureen Nicholson honorary life membership in the association at this year’s annual general meeting (AGM) in Vancouver.
Maureen’s nominators credited her with setting the standard for EAC’s annual conference after she organized the association’s successful 2000 conference in Vancouver. She was also an active member of EAC’s certification team, where she played a major role in developing the policies and procedures that shaped EAC Certification. As EAC president, she focused the executive council on its strategic goals and wrote many of the association’s national policies.
The crowd at the AGM rose to give Maureen a standing ovation as she accepted the honour. Not one to let the attention go to her head, she quipped, “My puppy, four cats and husband look at me with new respect.” Congratulations, Maureen!
Members also voted on several other motions at the AGM.
Motion to review EAC’s conflict of interest policy
Members voted in favour of the national executive council reviewing EAC’s conflict of interest policy, defining the commercial activities that may have legal and ethical ramifications, and returning to the membership with any recommendations arising from their review
Motion to exempt certified editors from paying a fee to appear on EAC’s certification roster
Members voted against including members who have passed the relevant certification test on EAC’s roster of certified editors without further charge.
Motion that all future AGM motions be presented in writing to the entire EAC membership in advance of the AGM
A motion to present all future AGM motions in writing to the entire membership in advance of the EAC’s annual general meeting was defeated.
Weren’t able to make it to the AGM? You can read the agenda and supporting documentation on the 2011 AGM page. The motions to approve the 2010 AGM minutes, the annual report, the auditor’s report and the new branch policy carried. EAC members can expect to see draft minutes of the meeting in the Members’ Area in the coming weeks.
