1. CERTIFICATION REMINDER: Register now!

There are just a few days left to register for EAC’s inaugural professional certification tests. On November 18, 2006, EAC will administer two tests: Elementary Knowledge of the Publishing Process and Proofreading. You’ll find further information in the attached press release.

Highly skilled editors who are ready to test their editorial mettle this year can register now to take the first steps toward becoming a Certified Professional Editor. Online registration instructions and further information can be found on EAC’s Certification web page. Registration closes on October 20, 2006.

2. REVISED MEMBERSHIP STRUCTURE: New membership categories now in effect

Following their approval by EAC members at the annual general meeting in June, the association’s new membership categories went into effect on October 1. EAC now offers five categories of membership: student member, qualifying member, voting member, emeritus member and honorary life member.

Qualifying members now acquire voting rights after three years of continuous membership and many EAC members have already been given voting status as a result of this provision. These members will receive new membership cards by mail over the next two weeks.

3. LES PRINCIPES DIRECTEURS: EAC’s French-language editing standards printed and ready for distribution

The print edition of Les Principes directeurs en révision professionnelle, EAC’s French-language editing standards, is now available. A copy of Les Principes will be mailed to every francophone member of the association. Non-francophone members may request a copy by emailing <info@editors.ca>.

TIP: You can also download the PDF version of Les Principes on EAC’s French website.

4. NATIONAL OFFICE: Staff news

The national office team continues to grow! The national office is pleased to announce the appointment of two new staff members.

Lianne Zwarenstein joined the staff on October 17, 2006, as the association’s part-time administrative assistant. Lianne will maintain the EAC membership and contacts database, process membership applications and renewals, handle phone and email enquiries from members and the public, manage members’ subscriptions to email discussion lists and provide other administrative support as needed.

Liz Stanwyck, our full-time project manager, starts on October 25, 2006. Liz will be responsible for planning and coordinating the annual EAC conference with the input of the Conference Committee, for coordinating various events connected with the certification program, for coordinating EAC’s participation at the Book Expo Canada trade show, and for assisting with other projects and tasks as needed.

The EAC National E-News Update is produced on behalf of the national executive council by the national office.
