It’s our time to shine

Editing might be an invisible art, but that doesn’t mean great editors should hide in the shadows. Help us shine a spotlight on editing excellence by submitting a nomination for the 2026 Tom Fairley Award.

The $2,000 grand prize will be presented to the winner at Editors Canada’s national conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on May 22, 2026. In recognition of their outstanding editorial performance, the finalists will also receive cash awards of $500 each. These cash prizes are made possible by Editors Canada and its generous donors.

The deadline to submit your completed nomination form is Friday, January 30, 2026.

Please spread this message far and wide. Nominees don’t have to be members of Editors Canada and self-nominations are encouraged.

For complete nomination instructions and other information about the award, visit the Tom Fairley Award page.

More than books

Editors know that the fine art of editing extends beyond books and print media. While the Tom Fairley Award has been awarded to many outstanding book editors since it was created in 1983, we encourage nominations for a variety of written projects. Whether it’s a magazine, a corporate or government report, software documentation or a book, we want to hear about it. When it comes to editing, the variety of material is limitless!

3. CONFERENCE: Submit a session proposal!

The 2026 Editors Canada conference committee is now accepting session proposals!

The theme of Editors26 is Editing in the Age of Misinformation. Sessions may be offered in English, French or both. Sessions will be one hour long, including time for introductions, breakout discussions or other activities, and Q&A.

To apply, please fill out and submit a session proposal form. All completed proposals must be received by Friday, January 9, 2026.

Conference registration is free for speakers!

Never been a speaker before? If you have an idea you’d like to explore, please don’t disqualify yourself based on presentation experience. We’d love to hear from you! Feel free to share this call for speakers with your other networks as well.

If you have any questions about submitting a proposal, please email info@editors.ca.

Editors26 will take place Thursday, May 21, to Saturday, May 23, 2026, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Dalhousie University’s downtown campus.
