Update on Editors Canada web projects, including the Online Directory of Editors

Exciting improvements are on the way! 🚀

Dear members and student affiliates,

We’re pleased to announce that Editors Canada’s national executive council (NEC) has approved high-priority upgrades to the association website that you’ve been asking for.

Rebuilding the Online Directory of Editors (ODE) on WordPress

As discussed in our May 12, 2025, announcement Update on Online Directory of Editors search engine optimization, the ODE has not been meeting member needs adequately since it launched on the new association website in 2024. In particular, Editors Canada members reported that individual profiles in the Online Directory of Editors aren’t showing up in Google search results. We understand your frustration since this is a paid service you use to find work.

The national office has been working with Findjoo (which powers our member portal and the directory) and our web developer to try to find a solution; however, they have not been successful in overcoming the limitations of the current ODE.

To that end, the NEC has made the decision to rebuild the ODE on WordPress. The data for profile entries will continue to come from the Findjoo member portal, but it will be published on static WordPress web pages that search engines can properly index. Our web developer has already begun working with Findjoo, under the supervision of the national office, on the new directory.

We look forward to seeing the new directory in the coming weeks. We’ve identified this upgrade as the highest priority and anticipate that it will launch this summer.

Career Development Hub

Looking for work? You’re not alone!

Editors Canada provides access to several job-search tools for those who are looking for work; however, members have reported to the career builder committee that they experience burnout trying to find relevant information or remain unaware of the information available. There is a wealth of information to be found in places beyond the Resources section of our website, organized under Find Work, Services, Training, Publications and The Editors’ Weekly, but this organization is not optimal for finding relevant information quickly.

The committee developed a proposal to replace the Find Work section of the Editors Canada website with a Career Development Hub (the Hub), an aggregate of pre-existing internal and relevant external web pages. The purpose of the Hub is to centralize all existing and future Editors Canada resources directly related to developing skills, finding work and working as an editor.

The committee’s plans for the Hub are to develop it in English initially, so it can serve as a productive model for a French version in a future upgrade.

We know that finding career information that is timely, relevant and regularly updated is a priority for members, so we’re pleased to support creating the Hub as a comprehensive resource for members. Our web developer will begin work on the Hub once rebuilding the ODE is complete.

We anticipate that both of these web projects will be completed in the coming months, and we’ll keep you posted along the way. Stay tuned for more details!
