Dear members and student affiliates,
Since the launch of the new association website in 2024, Editors Canada members have reported that individual profiles in the Online Directory of Editors aren’t showing up in Google search results. We understand your frustration since this is a paid service you use to find work.
The national office has been working with Findjoo (which powers our member portal and the directory) and our web developer to try to find a solution. They’ve implemented changes to encourage search engines to crawl and index the directory. The latest of these changes is a page of links to all the profiles in the directory. At the moment, this page is appearing in Google search results, but individual listings still are not, so Findjoo has added some refinements it hopes will help. Our web developer has also requested that Google re-index our site.
If you have a profile in the directory, one of the ways you can help to optimize your listing is to write a robust profile statement. Describe who you are, your skills, experience and achievements, particularly those relevant to the type of editing work you’re looking for. Search engines think of web pages that don’t have a lot of text (that is, a low word count) as “thin content,” which does not rank very high. Visit the member portal to update your profile now.
Search engine crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. The national office is keeping an eye on search engine results and will report back to the national executive council. We’ll keep you posted on these efforts and any next steps that may arise when we have more information.
We apologize sincerely for the inconvenience caused by the limitations of the directory and thank you for your patience.
